Investing in the Philippines
Personal finance
Within personal finance, money used to purchase shares, put in a
collective
living Philippines
investment scheme or used to buy any asset where there is an element of
capital risk is deemed an investment. Saving within personal finance
refers to
making money in the Philippines
money put aside, normally on a regular basis. This distinction is
important, as investment risk can cause a capital loss when an investment
is realized, unlike saving(s) where the more limited risk is cash
devaluing due to inflation.
In many instances the terms saving and investment are used
interchangeably, which confuses this distinction. For example many deposit
accounts are labeled as investment
Philippine investment
accounts by banks for marketing purposes. Whether an asset is a saving(s)
or an investment depends on where the money is invested: if it is cash
then it is savings, if its value can fluctuate then it is investment.
Real estate
In real estate, investment is money used to purchase property for the sole
purpose of holding or leasing for income and where there is an element of
capital risk. Unlike other economic or financial investment, real estate
is purchased. The seller is also called a Vendor and normally the
purchaser is called a Buyer.

Tips & Tactics
Helpful advice for making the most of this Guide
groups come in many forms, but generally share these traits: Members help
screen firms and commit to a certain amount of
Cebu investors
investments yearly. Groups meet regularly (often monthly) to hear investor
presentations. Member s decide individually whether to invest in a
business or not.
Members work jointly to validate plans, statements and entrepreneur
backgrounds.
While group sizes vary widely, the median pooled
Philippine investments
investment per round is around $400,000.
Some groups focus on specific areas, such as technology, but most are open
to a variety of industry sectors, including software, medical devices,
services and manufacturing.
groups typically look for a management team with proven skills and
experience; a unique product or service with a competitive edge, large
market and a clear, workable plan; evidence that you've invested
substantially yourself; potential for a strong return.
Once you locate a group, expect a multi-step process that includes an
initial application, a 'first cut' quick pre-screening to decide if you
meet minimum requirements, a full screen that includes one of the member's
becoming your champion; a pitch meeting where you present to the entire
group; and extensive due diligence.
Fifth,
Philippines foreign investment
investing is about risk-adjusted asset returns. Securities markets tend to
pay a premium for risk taking, but only for market-oriented risk taking.
Securities markets tend not to compensate for the risks associated with
holding the securities of individual companies. Individuals need to
understand this. There is no risk free money in investing.
Sixth, your financial and investment practices need to be cost effective.
Cost reduction is the single most important factor that will improve
investment returns for most people. In addition, when you cut out
investment costs, you also cut out the incentive for someone to sell
something to you. When you stop listening to financial sales people and
start looking proactively for low cost, passive, risk adjusted, and fully
diversified investments, you simplify your choices. You will still have
plenty of
business opportunities in the Philippinesinvestments
options. Furthermore, the scientific evidence indicates that these choices
will be the most favorable to your interests. Finally, greater tax
efficiency simply tends to be a by-product of following the other decision
rules listed above. More risky, poorly diversified, active strategies tend
to incur higher taxes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which startups have you invested in?
How can we get funding for our startup?
Apply for our next round of funding. We do two a year. Check back in a
couple months for the application form for the next cycle. The application
deadline will be in the fall.
What's the average age of people you fund?
25. A lot of people think it's younger because the press especially like
to write about young founders.
How much do you
investing Philippines
invest?
Usually $5000 + $5000 per founder. So $15,000 for two founders, $20,000
for three. Occasionally we invest more. The goal is usually to give you
enough money to build an impressive prototype or version 1, which you can
then use to get further funding.
What does get out of this?
Stock in the startup, from 2-10% of it. Usually about 6%.
We don't really need the money. Does it still make sense to apply?
Half (maybe more) of the startups we fund don't need the money. And in
fact the money is a only a small part of what does. The money we invest
works more like financial aid in college: it ensures that the people who
do need money can cover their living expenses while is happening.
What if we're doing something expensive?
We'll still fund you, but instead of trying to build something launchable
in three months, the goal becomes to build an impressive proof of concept
to take to later stage investors to raise more money.
Is an incubator?
No. The defining quality of incubators seems to be that companies work out
of the investor's space. We think that's a bad idea; it makes founders
feel like employees.
Do we need to write a
investing in the Philippines
business plan?
Not for us. We make funding decisions based on our application form and
personal interviews. We love demos, but we never read business plans.
Where are you?
Can a single person apply for funding?
Yes, but the odds of being accepted are much lower. A startup is too much
work for one person.
Can we do it without moving to where you are?
You can leave one founder at home, but the rest, including the CEO, have
to live where we are that cycle.
Do we have to start a company in the US for you to invest in us?
Yes, but that's usually not a problem. It's easy for foreign nationals to
start US companies (much easier than remaining here physically), and
investors and acquirers prefer them.
Do we have to be US citizens?
No, as long as you can get here for at least three months. We've funded
several startups founded by non-citizens.
Our group has two ideas. Can we submit two applications?
Ok. Just submit them from the accounts of different founders.
The is one of the coolest ideas in computer science. It's also a metaphor
for what we do. It's a program that runs programs; we're a company that
helps start companies.
Are you hiring?
No, but many of the companies we've funded are.
Are you looking for investors?
We're not looking for investors in itself, but you're welcome to invest in
the companies we fund. Twice a year the latest batch presents to
investors: the next will be in August 2008. If you'd like to be invited,
send an email to.
